RE: Discount Winnebago Parts Offer in Email

I need a new camera also. Their prices are WAY higher than the identical items on eBay. 10% off of 'too much $$$' is still 'too much $$$'

RE: I let my battery water get low. Are they toast?

Go with the two Trojan T105 6-volts (or the T-125 6-volts if you have a little more $$$). I'm on my fifth season with mine and I do a lot of dry camping.

RE: How are you and your RV during these times?

I am a consultant and had an unexpected 6-month vacation (March through August) due to the economy. I negotiated a start date with several clients many different times only to have the funding for the purchase order yanked out at the last minute. One client, whom I've already completed billable work for, had defaulted on their final invoices to me. I've been doing consulting for many years and have never run into an industry-wide situation as tenuous as this. Needless to say, the motorhome stayed parked all Spring and Summer (except for one short weekend nearby). Our big summer trip across the country never happened. Due to inactivity, bacterial growth in the diesel fuel had reared its ugly head. I am now with a client and funds are finally flowing. After several fuel treatments and fuel filters later, the motorhome runs great. My motorhome has been very active this fall. I have season tickets to Penn State and am tailgating at every opportunity (although I've had to sell the tickets for the big games to pay for the small games). Aside from local motorhome usage, I have been tight with my money. I rarely go out to dinner with the family and pricey vacations are on hold for the foreseeable future. Christmas will be OK for my wife and kids, but not lavish. You never know when that next unexpected 'vacation' is going hit.

RE: Fridge would not start on gas

I have to light a stove burner also or the fridge won't start on gas. After getting the burner lit, It still takes three good tries to get all of the air purged from the gas line.

RE: Onan LP 6500W Generator Help

RE: Rooftop A/C...to replace or not replace?

I would replace the shroud. I replaced the A/C recently and there are a few costs that I didn't take into consideration. I needed to buy a come-along to help me slide the old unit down the ladder and to get the unit back up. Disposal of the old isn't free neither. My trash company charges $60 to take old A/Cs. Removing the old unit was like opening a can of worms. I discovered that the roof had a depression where the old A/C was sitting. I needed to build up some material over the hole and reseal with Eternabond. If the old A/C is still functional, just fix the cosmetic damage and move on.

RE: Onan Oil change

According to my Onan Marquis 6500LP owners manual (yours may be different), Onan allows many different weights of oil depending on the outside temperatures that they operate in. In my climate, I can use the same Rotella 15W40 oil that my Cummins diesel uses. It makes my maintenance easier. I was able to cross-reference my Onan oil filter to a size 3600 that is commonly available from multiple filter companies. It saved me lots of money over the years. The air filter is the only Onan part that I buy (unless anyone knows what other common filter that this cross references to).

My TV and converter get amnesia. Any new TVs better?

I am looking in replacing my old TV with a new digital flat screen. Nothing big, Maybe 19". I tailgate frequently which means that the generator is run intermittently. I currently have a digital converter box that needs to be reprogrammed every time I turn the generator on. The TV is the same way. I first have to program the TV by allowing it to search all the channels (it only needs to search channel 3) to recognize the digital converter THEN the digital converter has to scan through the frequencies to find valid channels. In a 'Home' application, the TV and converter box are set once and are never set again (due to constant power). My new TV will eliminate the need for a converter box. I am looking for a 19" TV that doesn’t get amnesia every time the power is cut. Any thoughts?

RE: How to handle non-RV family that want to borrow your MH?

I once had a backpack (my first rv). I hiked on many trips for many years over hundreds of miles. It was fully functional after all that time. A friend borrowed it. In the distance between the back of his car and the tent 100' away, he managed to break straps and cause tears. He did more damage in a few feet and one minute than I did in several years and hundreds of miles. Unbelievable! I now camp in something more elaborate. It doesn't get loaned out. I've been approached by a close family who wanted to go cross-country. I simply forwarded some private rental agencies and let them proceed from there. They were appreciative and had a great trip. I was appreciative to get postcards from them. My motorhome was appreciative not to get mishandled by a newby.

RE: 22.5 vs. 19.5

Wow! When did 19.5" wheels become too tiny? When my rig was built, 16" tires were the standard on the gas version. My coach was the diesel version and came with the larger 19.5" wheels. It really lifts the coach off of the ground.

RE: running 2 ac's on 30 amp service

There are several ways to do this. I tapped into the rear AC circuit at the generator and added the cord there. You will need to search for the different ways to do this. This is what I did! It works great. I intecepted the secondary circuit of the generator and ran it to a 20-amp outlet that I installed next to the 30-amp outlet within the utility storage area. I then intercepted the rear Air Conditioner line at the generator and installed a 3-prong 20-amp cord that also terminates in the utility storage area. I now have the ability to plug the cord into the 20-amp outlet from the generator OR plug into the 20-amp shore outlet (just like I can do with the 30-amp cord). It keeps things frosty cold during hot days.

RE: Norcold Refrigerator

I have a Norcold Model 682 that is just as old as yours. I just started leaking ammonia recently. Later this week I will be getting a remanufactured cooling unit and installing it. My cost should be around $400 when everything is said and done.

RE: any amish experts here?

WW: I haven't had a conversation with this actor in 14 years. I'm guessing that they were talking about the tourist traps outside Lancaster. As far as avoiding road apples: I try to steer clear of them while driving the motorhome. Apparently the road apples get flung up by my tires and accumulates on the rock guard. The bees love it. They take the 'stuff' with them and load it into my rolled up awning. There is nothing like rolling out the awning on nice sunny nice and have horse droppings raining on top of you:) Camping is always about experiencing something new.

RE: any amish experts here?

If those buggies are in downtown Lancaster, then they might have car insurance. Yup, the people driving the buggies might not be Amish at all. They might be actors. I know a local actor who had to audition for an 'amish' gig in Lancaster. They had to remove their jewely and must know how to operate a buggy. Apparently, The Amish are an attraction that tourist expect to see in Lancaster. In reality, development has pushed the real Amish further out of town. Time to get actors. Those actors drive cars. Those actors also have car insurance.

RE: Something that Might be Worth While to Know!!!

If you lock your car with key fob, you are transmitting a 'lock' signal. Wouldn't the thief need the 'unlock' signal instead? The best new scam I heard was to place a piece of paper on the back window. Here is what happens: You get in the car, you start the car, you then notice the paper and get out of the car to remove it. The thief jumps in the car and locks it. He now has your car and he also might have your phone and/or your purse/wallet. If you see a paper on your window, drive away!

RE: Crying A at the Flying J

Maybe I should explain this a little better. There were three lanes and three pumps. They all looked and performed like fuel lanes. The pump on the third lane was turned facing the second lane and was equidistant between the second and third lane. The person in the second lane was using the second pump because that is the side that their fuel door faced. I even looked to see if the person behind him in the second lane to see where their fuel door was. I wasn't holding up anyone from fueling. As far as somebody waiting to dump, I started to dump first, then started the pump. The pump was done BEFORE I wrapped up the dump hose. I didn't even flush the tanks. Nobody would have had to wait any longer because of my fueling. The fact that nobody was behind me was even better. I could easily see where my efforts could be conceived as inconsiderate. The truth is, I didn't know that I was doing anything wrong. I've been doing the same way for five years and it has never been an issue. I know better now and will sin no more;). I could also see how some would think that I was holding up two lanes (one for dumping and one for fueling). This was far from the case. I always try to be aware of my surroundings so as to be as considerate possible. The ONLY person that was bent out of shape was the pump manager. His tirade was unacceptable.

RE: Crying A at the Flying J

I will continue to use FlyingJ until the corporation shows me it has lost interest in RV business and will consider them RV friendly until shown other wise. Horsedoc, I was singing the same tune for the last five years...until last Sunday.:( Update: I have received a call from Flying J. They were very apologetic and took down my information. I did admit being in the wrong, but I objected to the heavy-handed way the station manager decided to handle the situation. They promised that this situation would not happen again. Now that I know what I did wrong, I will avoid creating the same problem.

I took your advice and sent an email to Flying J. If I get a response, I'll post it here.
